Why learning to play a musical instrument is good for children

Learning an instrument has been proven beneficial especially during childhood whilst the brain is still in the critical stages of development.

Playing a musical instrument enhances brain cell activity, improving memory and abstract reasoning, skills which are essential for subjects like science and mathematics. Playing an instrument also gives a child an outlet to express their creativity and emotions and is a skill they can continue to develop throughout life.

Making music is fun and children who play a musical instrument are constantly improving their physical co-ordination and motor skills, which in turn will improve their balance and hand-eye co-ordination.

Music is also great for the brain! Not only does music activate just about all of the brain, it also keeps our brain pathways and networks strong, improving cognitive function from a young age, which has been strongly linked to academic success!

However, the advantages of learning a musical instrument go further than academic achievement. It also improves a child’s social, emotional and language development.
